Unveiling the artistry of FerriFirenze, in conversation with master artisan Giulio Ferrari

In the heart of Tuscany's rolling hills and verdant landscapes lies a sanctuary of artistry: FerriFirenze. From its home in a Renaissance villa, the brand upholds the legacy of Italian craftsmanship with its gold and diamond jewellery collections, which are created with sustainable luxury in mind. Conceived by Ilaria Furlotti and master craftsman Giulio Ferrari, FerriFirenze gold and diamond jewellery represents more than mere adornment. Dreams and emotions are woven into each carefully crafted piece.
In conversation with Giulio, the company’s owner, who is also Ilaria’s daughter, Giulia Callegari, finds out more: “I’m so excited to be here with one of the brand’s most important people: Giulio Ferrari. He is the co-founder and, together with my mom, they started everything,” she says.

Giulio, tell me, when did you start this work?

I started this job many, many years ago. Actually, I’m kind of scared to say it because it has been 40 years. I started after the end of my basic studies, and I went on to study at the Institute of Art in Valenza. After that, I stayed in the city for 18 years. I learned all the handcrafting techniques from master goldsmiths in Valenza, a town renowned for its goldsmithing tradition.

Where did you stay before moving FerriFirenze to Villa Corsi Salviati?

We used to be in Scandicci, a town just outside Florence, famous for its manufacturing and handmade goods, in an industrial building that we converted into a workshop. That’s where our journey started, but we needed to move to a better environment. After much research, we found this beautiful Villa Corsi Salviati, which inspires us to craft our jewellery.

Can you tell me about one necklace or piece that drove you crazy from a project perspective?

Many things drive me crazy because our design combines many elements and movements. We put much effort into movement; we try not to have static pieces. One of the collections that excited me a lot is the Vito Collection.”

Which one inspired an original solution among all the collections you crafted, from our designer’s drawings to your projects?

It isn’t easy because we always try to find technical solutions to connect the design to Italian craftsmanship and wearability. Vito is one of those collections that we had to put a lot of time into. We had to find solutions with titanium springs, and it was quite a long journey before we could actually produce it.

Also, the Artificio necklace that won the Best Fashionable Jewellery Award at the 20th edition of the Middle East Watch & Jewellery of the Year 2024. Features a pioneering design and exceptional handwork.

The Intrigo necklace is another masterpiece made with a revolutionary gold mesh system that is flexible and soft to the touch. You can hold it in your fist, and it will return to its original shape when you open your hand again.

How would you describe what you do at FerriFirenze? You do so many things. Of course, you handle the research and development department and the workshop.

My main task is to analyse our designers’ drawings on a technical, aesthetic, and wearable level and find solutions to make them a reality. I also find ways to extend these pieces in a series.

What role does the team play at the atelier?

FerriFirenze bespoke pieces and collections are only possible because of our team. This job requires synergies, and I am grateful to everyone for their work on these projects.

Beyond the workshop, Giulio finds solace and inspiration in nature. He loves to sail and ride mountain bikes. Being out in nature, whether on the water or in the mountains, lets him clear his mind and refresh his creativity.
This connection to nature resonates with FerriFirenze’s commitment to sustainability and the inspiration the designers find in their surroundings at Villa Corsi Salviati. The Italian jewellery brand has an eco-conscious ethos. Each gold and diamond jewellery piece is handmade by artisans in their Florentine atelier, which reduces their carbon footprint. Transparency in gem and stone procurement is another priority. The brand also ensures the longevity of each product with a lifetime guarantee and free repair service.
“We ensure the processes are environmentally friendly and we support local craftsmen by designing and marketing products made with love, by local artisans,” adds Giulio.

FerriFirenze’s dedication to preserving Florence’s artistic, historical, and cultural heritage is evident in its effort to bring its “Made in Italy” passion to the world, with a focus on Europe, the Middle East, South Korea, Turkey, and East Asia.
Aware that modern women choose to wear their Italian jewellery rather than keep it hidden, FerriFirenze responds with collections of high-quality materials and unusual patterns. Conflict-free diamonds and gemstones set in 18k gold create an exclusive aesthetic.

Pop-up boutiques, organised in collaboration with local partners, and home services promise immersive experiences, allowing customers to delve into the art and history of FerriFirenze.
The magic of Florence, conveyed in each exquisite piece, continues to enchant those who wear a FerriFirenze jewel – and the bespoke fragrance. But that's another story…
